Golden Sunlight Mine - Whitehall, Montana
In attempt to advance reclamation efforts for
Golden Sunlight
Gold Mine, Native Resources was hired to establish mature native tree stands on a reclaimed slope of the gold mine just outside of Whitehall, Montana. The slope faces Interstate 90 and created some negative publicity due to the scarring of the mountainside that it has created.
Placer Dome Mines has introduced this project to several mine related groups in hopes that this practice can be initiated prior to the actual mining disturbance.
In May of 2001, our team congregated at the mine to pick out and GPS twenty-eight pine and juniper trees. The trees ranged from 10 to 20 feet in height, averaging 13 caliper inches. The dig was a success and all trees were producing new cones and branch shoots by mid-May.
Bill Seybert, Lands, Contracts and Materials Supervisor of Golden Sunlight Mines, Inc. states, "I just wanted to let you know how nice it was to work with your Company this past year on inventorying, salvaging and planting trees on our reclamation site. The survival rate is in excess of what you had guaranteed and all trees appear to be doing well. Your employees from all levels of your company were very professional and it was a pleasure to work with them".
